Anna Cei:

Hi, welcome to "What matters most to you?". In each Hi, good evening, Richard. Or is it RTRS or is it Rich? Or how do

RTRS:

All of those. Hi. So any one of those is great.

Anna Cei:

Okay,

RTRS:

if you want to keep it short. RTRS is usually usually

Anna Cei:

right

RTRS:

But yeah, I go by I go by many names.

Anna Cei:

So your full name is Richard, right?

RTRS:

Yes, ma'am.

Anna Cei:

Richard Green. Yes, ma'am. That's me. Richard The Rock Star. RTRS. So cool.

RTRS:

Well, thank you.

Anna Cei:

And where are you right now?

RTRS:

I'm at Temple Studios in Jackson, California.

Anna Cei:

Jackson, California. What part of California is that?

RTRS:

Uh...Northern California about an hour from the Capitol Sacramento.

Anna Cei:

Last year, there was some fires in an area called

RTRS:

Not far, not far. We had the big Butte Fire here before

Anna Cei:

Mmm

RTRS:

That's actually the logo for our studio is Butte

Anna Cei:

Oh, wow.

RTRS:

Yeah, that's right down the street.

Anna Cei:

Was that studio damaged as well?

RTRS:

No, the studio's underground. And I actually came down.

Anna Cei:

That sounds super cool.

RTRS:

It was like raining ashes.

Anna Cei:

You know I now I have to come and visit you because to

RTRS:

Oh, gosh, I would love to tell you about the history of this studio. It's

Anna Cei:

So before we dive in and talk a little bit about what

RTRS:

It is! I was born in Idaho, but I moved here when I

Anna Cei:

you don't remember Idaho then?

RTRS:

No, no, not at all. I haven't been back since

Anna Cei:

and so you're not the couch potato from the potato

RTRS:

No, I do love potatoes. But I'm not a couch potato.

Unknown:

So when people hear California I think a lot of well.

RTRS:

That's right.

Anna Cei:

What California is yours?

RTRS:

So right where we are in Jackson. It's beautiful. We're

Anna Cei:

And that's where you want to be? that's like you

RTRS:

Oh yeah, I love it here because if I want to go to the right there with all you know, with all the tall buildings and everything I get to come home

Anna Cei:

in Sacramento.

RTRS:

Yeah, I come back here and I'm just chill where it's safe. I love it here.

Anna Cei:

And it's Jackson, where you grew up then after you

RTRS:

Yes, ma'am. I went to elementary school junior high

Anna Cei:

Wow. That's kind of cool.

RTRS:

Yeah.

Anna Cei:

Do you mind telling me how old you are?

RTRS:

Yeah, of course. I'm 31 years old. or years young.

Anna Cei:

Oh, you're such a young guy.

RTRS:

Thank you. Thanks. I started getting freaked out when

Anna Cei:

You know, turning 30 turning 30 is way more difficult

RTRS:

Yeah,

Anna Cei:

once you're adult and you're fine with it, you know,

RTRS:

Yeah. I'll always be young at heart just like you. So I guess age doesn't really matter does it?

Anna Cei:

No, not at all. Not at all

RTRS:

I'm just wanna try keep looking good. That's all I'm

Anna Cei:

Well, you know, drink, drink your green tea and take there, you know, attend concerts, talk to people of all

RTRS:

So I, of course, the temple studios, I record pretty much have their own country.

Anna Cei:

Mm hmm.

RTRS:

Crazy. Technically, that's not California anymore. That's

Anna Cei:

Right. Right.

RTRS:

So I actually work up there to protect that.

Anna Cei:

Ah, Ah, cool.

RTRS:

Yeah.

Anna Cei:

You are a professional musician. And now you're telling

RTRS:

Yeah, I do. I do at Temple studios, we stay pretty busy. We

Anna Cei:

So Temple studios is the only studio around in quite

RTRS:

Yeah, the only the only professional one there's some

Anna Cei:

What's the advantage of going to a studio as you say

RTRS:

Yeah,

Anna Cei:

tell me something sell sell me in, I'm a musician. I'm

RTRS:

Oh, yeah.

Anna Cei:

And I'm I am in California. I live in Reno,

RTRS:

Oh, great. No problem. microcell. That easy. Of course, at my house. It was like too easy to go in that other room

Anna Cei:

Ah,

RTRS:

or I need to go check on this or do that it's too easy to

Anna Cei:

Mmm

RTRS:

It's like a holy place where you come and the vibe is

Anna Cei:

a holy place underground!

RTRS:

Yeah. And there's not even

Anna Cei:

talk about being grounded. I like that.

RTRS:

Yeah, exactly. And there's not cellphone service down here

Anna Cei:

Mmm

RTRS:

So you kind of come down here and

Anna Cei:

nothing distracts you.

RTRS:

Yeah, you just do your art. So I love to just come here music, and having the capability to actually sit there and record

Anna Cei:

No.

RTRS:

So it's really nice to come here and have someone do it

Anna Cei:

right

RTRS:

Even though I can engineer and I can record myself, do all that, and it kind of splits your focus.

Anna Cei:

And as you say something interesting there, feedback. By going to somebody who really knows sound and know

RTRS:

Exactly. Oh, gosh, it's so good to have someone there who,

Anna Cei:

Mm hmm.

RTRS:

The people I work with, when I record my stuff, there's

Anna Cei:

Right Right.

RTRS:

That's such a cool feeling.

Anna Cei:

I know you as vocalist, as a rapper, but do

RTRS:

I do I I play guitar. I play bass. keyboards, little bit

Anna Cei:

Let's rephrase this question. Is there an instrument

RTRS:

Yeah. Let's see. woodwind I never learned woodwinds

Anna Cei:

Ahhh.

RTRS:

That's the one thing like saxophone and clarinet. No,

Anna Cei:

I play the flute and recorder actually,

RTRS:

that's awesome. I play trumpet. So I could do trombone

Anna Cei:

The brass.

RTRS:

Yeah, yeah, yeah. So yeah, stringed instruments.

Anna Cei:

What's the brass do to like marching bands for

RTRS:

Yeah, it was band class. in fourth grade. I started

Anna Cei:

And that was your first instrument or did you play

RTRS:

I started playing drums in fourth grade too at home. You

Anna Cei:

Mmm.

RTRS:

Like even when I was in elementary school I had posters I always knew I wanted to be a Rock Star

Anna Cei:

You listened to hair metal when you were in

RTRS:

You know who I got it from most was my aunt. My aunt was here's a punk rock CD with Rancid Ah, and I'd be like,

Anna Cei:

She really sounds like a fairy.

RTRS:

Yeah. Oh my gosh, she's she's the reason I am a creative person I

Anna Cei:

Mmm. I love that she provided you with all kinds of

RTRS:

Oh my gosh, yeah. I was definitely a weird kid in school

Anna Cei:

I know you as the rapper. And he was telling me

RTRS:

Oh, I love it all. I love all music. So much.

Anna Cei:

See I don't. I'm the other way around.

RTRS:

that's okay too.

Anna Cei:

I love a lot of different kinds of music. But I

RTRS:

Jazz could be hard to listen to sometimes.

Anna Cei:

Yeah, well, I like jazz. I just don't like all

RTRS:

Yeah,

Anna Cei:

I like metal. I just don't like all metal even like

RTRS:

Ooh Creepy

Anna Cei:

doesn't mean I like every group. Yeah, I like every

RTRS:

Oh, you want to go with bands? Okay, I'll tell you. My my room and just go over those.

Anna Cei:

So Blink...

RTRS:

Yes. Oh, my gosh.

Anna Cei:

Considering Blink. Is that what also got you into,

RTRS:

Oh, you know, it was the bands I liked.

Anna Cei:

Yeah.

RTRS:

And it was my auntie too, my aunt always had a lot. And

Anna Cei:

But I mean for me, you you have a look of like Travis

RTRS:

Yeah, yeah.Thank you.

Anna Cei:

Little bit inspired by him. Even aesthetically maybe

RTRS:

definitely e like, Oh my gosh, even when I was in junior high, I was drawn out to

Anna Cei:

When did you get your first tattoo?

RTRS:

My 18th birthday Yeah, exactly. On the day, my aunt took me to the tattoo shop

Anna Cei:

Yeah, it's close to the bone. That's why I keep a

RTRS:

ha ha ha It does help. Oh my gosh it does

Anna Cei:

Yeah. So I was thinking if you don't mind, maybe we can listen to

RTRS:

Yeah, I would love that.

Anna Cei:

That was great Rich or RTRS

RTRS:

ha ha

Anna Cei:

Well you told me a little bit so you listen to all

RTRS:

Mhm mhmm. Absolutely. Absolutely. Just

Anna Cei:

and you're never you're never veered away from

RTRS:

Nope. No, no, I, you know, I've got a lot of interests and I was always really quiet. And music for me was where I found

Anna Cei:

Mmmm,

RTRS:

therapy to me.

Anna Cei:

Like a journaling. Yeah,

RTRS:

yeah. So like, ever since I was a kid if I wasn't

Anna Cei:

Mmm. So you also like to write lyrics then And is that what brought

RTRS:

Yeah, exactly.

Anna Cei:

We have to walk me through your musical life story

RTRS:

I'd love to

Anna Cei:

there was like these different kinds of music. What

RTRS:

So after the trumpet, oh, gosh, I'm so excited to tell you

Anna Cei:

That's beautiful. Yeah,

RTRS:

yeah. Yeah. So you want me to start with when I started

Anna Cei:

Wherever you want to start where you feel like this

RTRS:

Yeah, I started playing guitar and learning, you know,

Anna Cei:

You were not the good singer?.

RTRS:

No, no. When I started, I was trash. Especially Oh, man. When I

Anna Cei:

Mmm.

RTRS:

So yeah, I started singing I started playing guitar got about my mom. She didn't give a f**k about that. She's like you pretend we're playing the guitar. And it was like, so fun

Anna Cei:

Right. right. right.

RTRS:

We all have our like black lights and strobe lights. And it

Anna Cei:

So in the beginning when you were like jamming out

RTRS:

Yeah, not in the beginning. It was eighth grade it was at my friend Cory's house. There's five of us in The drum set everything all set up. We had one like one of those

Anna Cei:

Yeah yeah, yeah,

RTRS:

we set it on the ground. And we turned on the computer.

Anna Cei:

Oh, over air like there was

RTRS:

Yeah, like all one track. Just live.

Anna Cei:

Oh, but that sounds good. To see that, you know, the

RTRS:

yeah. And now, you know, if we were to listen to it,

Anna Cei:

You had a business mind already then too then? Oh, wow.

RTRS:

We just we had like the stuff to print up. You know, we Oh, yeah. I've been hustling. I've been a hustler my That's where we started progressing.

Anna Cei:

Your first multitrack

RTRS:

So we met back. Then we figured out Yeah, we're like, time when

Anna Cei:

you know what Steve Tyler says, you know, 'fake it

RTRS:

Oh, gosh, it's true. It's so true. The more I've lived my life, I see that like,

Anna Cei:

Yeah,

RTRS:

it really brings it back to you.

Anna Cei:

Yeah.

RTRS:

And it works. And that's all I do.

Anna Cei:

It's all about that radiation versus seeking, you

RTRS:

Exactly and God, it's it's amazing. And that's why I like

Anna Cei:

Yeah yeah

RTRS:

I was just a kid that started in that trailer. And

Anna Cei:

Yeah.

RTRS:

And it didn't even have a cover on it. Like you could see know, like, same thing with with that computer. It was janky and it's not pirated now. I paid like 1000 bucks for the super

Anna Cei:

well you had that will to improve constantly probably exactly when you don't have the exact perfect tools, you do everything

RTRS:

Exactly. Yeah, like I just used what I had. And as soon as age, I was the only kid you know, that's like 16 years old.

Anna Cei:

And I was like, in middle school already.

RTRS:

That was in high school. I started working. Yeah, that's

Anna Cei:

Yes,

RTRS:

I was f***ing 16-17 years old, and I had all that s**t. have those guitars I bought.

Anna Cei:

I'm hearing a lot of inner drive. You know, it seems

RTRS:

I had a tough childhood in a lot of ways not to like a,

Anna Cei:

And the fairy auntie who gave you music?

RTRS:

Yeah, oh my gosh, that was like it. That's what changed it.

Anna Cei:

A way out.

RTRS:

Because those situations that I was in, you know, if you situations that I had when I was a kid. So it's almost like my myself there. And I did it for hours when I wasn't working.

Anna Cei:

you probably have a quite big catalogue to dig from.

RTRS:

Oh, gosh, yeah, hundreds and hundreds. For everything rap Dude,

Anna Cei:

I told you. You know, I completely hear you because I I want to work with musicians who want to go places and you improve, you know, a lot of labels, they're like, no, if you

RTRS:

It's crazy. I've had so much of it. Yeah, like, my whole the game and be like, that person they told me to beat. I got hip hop.

Anna Cei:

Never forget who the f**k you are

RTRS:

yeah, this is who I am. I'm not just a rapper. And I'm star either. ha ha I'm a motivator. And I'm a go getter.

Anna Cei:

Yeah,yeah, definitely.

RTRS:

and I'm an artist. And that's what I'm so happy about.

Anna Cei:

And I mean, just the fact that you were quite young

RTRS:

Yeah, it's so crazy. Life is awesome.

Anna Cei:

Yeah, so where do you want to go? Where have you been

RTRS:

Oh, gosh. All my dreams that I've written down. They've

Anna Cei:

affirmations. Yep.

RTRS:

Yeah. So I'll give you some examples. Like, all of my

Anna Cei:

Yeah, yeah, yeah

RTRS:

gosh, like Shifty Shellshock, the singer of that drive me down to the Bay Area. And we'd be listening to Crazy

Anna Cei:

Oh, wow

RTRS:

and I got to be on stage with him. Wow, singing those Me and my best friends used to go and watch them play and we

Anna Cei:

Yeah.

RTRS:

And I remember just meeting them after the show and

Anna Cei:

But then when I hear this, it sounds like you know,

RTRS:

it's unbelievable.

Anna Cei:

I have experienced it myself. I'm a firm believer that

RTRS:

True. It's so true. And sometimes it seems unbelievable. But you know what, like, I've I've

Anna Cei:

Little by little You know, that doubt will be

RTRS:

it's it's so amazing.

Anna Cei:

You don't come across as a person who doubts himself

RTRS:

Thank you. There are times I do you know, I'm, I'm good at am. And looking back at the accomplishments and then moving Yeah,

Anna Cei:

Yeah, the problem is if you start if you start doubting even if you're in a dark tunnel. you know, if you stop in the middle of the dark

RTRS:

Yeah, Yeah. And that's where I am today. That's funny, you the road. I'm doing this. I'm doing that every day. And it tell I was going through it. But that was one of the hardest

Anna Cei:

You were a little hyper ha ha hyper but not the be max speed, that's fine. But you can also be max speed and

RTRS:

Yeah.

Anna Cei:

And that's kind of dangerous.

RTRS:

And when I met you, yeah, when I met you, that's when I

Anna Cei:

Mmm.

RTRS:

So that's like, back then. That was what I wanted. That was

Anna Cei:

Kind of empty?

RTRS:

and coming home. Yeah, when I came home, I was in the

Anna Cei:

Yep.

RTRS:

You know, I'm doing all these interviews. Yeah. I'm

Anna Cei:

Yeah,

RTRS:

and the people aren't there

Anna Cei:

You crash from that h gh

RTRS:

and the shows aren't there

Anna Cei:

Yeah.

RTRS:

And yeah, and I came home and I was heartbroken. You know, the people that like, love me the most. And it sucks, it

Anna Cei:

it's so important to take that time. And even if it's did I like?

RTRS:

Yes

Anna Cei:

And what things should I change? And not just say,

RTRS:

Yes,

Anna Cei:

without moving forward. But what you need is

RTRS:

Exactly, exactly. Oh, my gosh, we're on the same page.

Anna Cei:

I think so I think so

RTRS:

The last two years,

Anna Cei:

yep.

RTRS:

They've been hard, but we push through it. And now we're

Anna Cei:

yep,

RTRS:

we're about to get it more than ever. And it feels amazing.

Anna Cei:

Yeah. And you need to, you know, for energy too you

RTRS:

Oh, gosh,

Anna Cei:

people take your energy you have to also receive.

RTRS:

Yes.

Anna Cei:

If you give everything from yourself, you get depleted,

RTRS:

Exactly. That's what happened to me. And, you know, I just have a big heart. And I love the people I stressful. It's hard to say no to people. But you have to

Anna Cei:

but you have to,yes, you have to

RTRS:

You have to Yeah. This is the first interview I've done in a while, actually. Haha,

Anna Cei:

that's cool. Yeah. This interview, as you know, it's about what matters to

RTRS:

Great, it's a great question. And I'm honored to people that are negative, or don't believe in you. If you

Anna Cei:

right

RTRS:

Because I just kept that vision in my head. And I just that, like me. I taught myself how to use that janky computer they will like you said and lik you've seen come to you. Yeah

Anna Cei:

Listen to your heart means also to listen to your

RTRS:

True.

Anna Cei:

Whereas the heart is really the core of who you are.

RTRS:

Yeah, exactly. Exactly. Hey, you know my last name

Anna Cei:

So So listen to your heart. It's also when you talk.

RTRS:

Yeah, Be true to yourself.

Anna Cei:

Mm hmm. And be strong. who you are.

RTRS:

I did everything they told me I couldn't. Gosh, Anna gosh,

Anna Cei:

when do you think you came to this realization that

RTRS:

Ooh,that is a great question. It's actually a to figure out like, Whoa, like, okay, so like, I made this, this days, that was like, the coolest thing in the world to me, you that's f***ing crazy. That's still blows my mind to this day.

Anna Cei:

Right

RTRS:

Gosh, I keep getting off track. I get so excited when I

Anna Cei:

No, that's awesome. It's awesome. And it's like, help others you know, that's part of it. Right?

RTRS:

Exactly.

Anna Cei:

So if this is, this is what your heart burns for, then

RTRS:

Yeah,

Anna Cei:

you want to radiate that truth that you found.

RTRS:

Exactly. That's where I come in with, like the taking people, you can do this. It's like, wait, I can do anything. was.

Anna Cei:

And do, does it mean like you hurt others in the

RTRS:

I have in my life. And you'll see like, now if you go meeting you, and going over and really starting to have a voice like smoking one and chilling out there. I performed one time to think like, Oh, yeah, like, I need to do drugs. And I need to

Anna Cei:

in order to be cool.

RTRS:

Even if I am a gangster.

Anna Cei:

Yeah, yeah

RTRS:

I'll always be gangster in the right way. Like, you don't

Anna Cei:

That was destructive.

RTRS:

It hurt me. Yeah, it is destructive.

Anna Cei:

Right. Because if you're talking about Listen to

RTRS:

Exactly. Yeah. So like, at the time, you know, that age Yeah, that age this and that, and then you go and experience that and realize,

Anna Cei:

Mm hmm.

RTRS:

That doesn't bring fulfillment. The real power I saying, Yeah, go get it. Follow your dreams. But you got to help

Anna Cei:

you have to be responsible.

RTRS:

Yeah, like when I was a kid, and I had those posters on abused and depressed. I had a hard life can look at and be

Anna Cei:

right

RTRS:

That's my heart now it's like, Okay, I gotta show you

Anna Cei:

so as a as a as a rock star, as a rock star or as like

RTRS:

That's right,

Anna Cei:

but creative and constructive. And, you know,

RTRS:

Exactly. The more I go through life, the more my heart

Anna Cei:

and how you touch them

RTRS:

and what you portray and put out

Anna Cei:

Yeah, yeah,

RTRS:

yeah, exactly. I was a little reckless for a while.

Anna Cei:

That's a great insight. I'm really amazed that and so will your music.

RTRS:

Exactly, exactly. And I'm really thankful for it all

Anna Cei:

What does your heart tell you now? Like, what's

RTRS:

To just

Anna Cei:

What's coming up? You know, how do you see the future?

RTRS:

Oh, gosh, it's, it's about to be petrous than ever. Because Now I just am who I am. And I just act with love.

Anna Cei:

And you control it by your heart.

RTRS:

Yeah. And I'm like, you know what? eff it, you know, this new record, it's

Anna Cei:

creating content. You know, in a way in marketing and

RTRS:

I do. I sure do. And you have to not be scared to do

Anna Cei:

But you also have to have skills. I mean, obviously

RTRS:

That's true.

Anna Cei:

I mean, you can't just be a great rapper and a great

RTRS:

That's true.

Anna Cei:

And there has to be limits to I'm sure. I mean,

RTRS:

I'm not but I have thought about doing some country I want

Anna Cei:

Americana?

RTRS:

some acoustic stuff just to pay. Yeah, to pay homage to

Anna Cei:

If your heart is in Jackson,

RTRS:

it is Oh gosh, I love seeing the world and traveling needed to develop in a way a way to escape.

Anna Cei:

Mmm.

RTRS:

So like that gives me drive and that gave me that like

Anna Cei:

motivation. Yeah,

RTRS:

but Jackson, Jackson, California, you'll hear Johnny

Anna Cei:

Ah, it's in a Gold Country.

RTRS:

When they found gold. That's it. That's where I am, studio.

Anna Cei:

How many people live in Jackson today?

RTRS:

Oh, gosh.

Anna Cei:

It's a small place. I mean, it's a small place. Right?

RTRS:

It's less than 10,000. I think the last time Yeah. Last the studio. So back in the day, during Prohibition, when alcohol prostitute And you know, I'm n t you know, I'm not gonna dive i a good time. And that's wh t Jackson was. This was like o

Anna Cei:

So the name the name Temple studios, was that

RTRS:

Yeah, Tas, named at Temple studios. Tas is such a put in like all the soundproofing and everything, hour, even these days, what we charge is basically free.

Anna Cei:

so you do you help also not just with recording you

RTRS:

Yeah, exactly. Whether it's, I'm working with someone someone who just doesn't know how the process works, and I'll

Anna Cei:

Yeah Yeah.

RTRS:

It's cool to like, bring people

Anna Cei:

Stand up straight. We need that air to come out. Yeah,

RTRS:

exactly. And like, it's really fun to to have my

Anna Cei:

I feel super excited. And I want to go there now.

RTRS:

Yeah,

Anna Cei:

I'm in another country. So it's a little far

RTRS:

Oh,I can't wait. And I even just started the brand

Anna Cei:

now you got me. Okay, now you got me. You say the

RTRS:

That's right. That's right. I'm right here in the

Anna Cei:

Ahh

RTRS:

Right here is still the Wild West.

Anna Cei:

You're expanding your brand, like to incorporate even,

RTRS:

That's right. That's right. You gotta get it

Anna Cei:

Mmm mm I'll hustle sunglasses, I'll hustle CDs, I'll do children's As long as it's in your heart.

RTRS:

Exactly. And now that I picked the things that just make keep working at it one day, you just take your feet off the

Anna Cei:

Yeah,yeah,

RTRS:

easy.

Anna Cei:

Yeah.

RTRS:

So now like, I'm at a point where I can do that I can

Anna Cei:

And you are really emblematic and token of that,

RTRS:

That's right.

Anna Cei:
